Our Mission
Our mission at the Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) is to increase access to evidence-based tobacco treatments in an effort to positively impact outcomes. Our capacity to help reduce smoking is strengthened by the depth of activities at all levels - individual, community, health system, and policy. CTI programs are components of MaineHealth, Maine Medical Center, and the Maine Medical Center Research Institute.
CTI developed and manages Maine's comprehensive, statewide tobacco treatment initiative, supported by the Partnership for A Tobacco-Free Maine (includes the Maine Tobacco HelpLine and Tobacco Medication and Tobacco Training programs). We conduct research and quality improvement projects with health systems and medical practices, test new therapies and methods to increase quit rates, and partner with organizations inside and outside of Maine.
Our Vision and Values
- Treatment must be delivered in a manner supportive of tobacco users
- Effective treatment must eliminate barriers to participation and use
- Successful treatment uses proven methods, tailored to preferences of individuals
- Treatment requires a coordinated system of health professionals, policymakers, payers, and others in the community
- Treatment goals must include changes in attitudes, behaviors, and health systems, and policies - as well as long-term quit rates
