The Center for Tobacco Independence is focused on access and delivery of evidence-based treatments for tobacco use and dependence. Under the direction of Susan Swartz, MD, MPH, research had been conducted on integrating tobacco interventions into health care systems, measuring and improving tobacco-related provider performance, testing novel therapies, and measuring use of Maine’s statewide tobacco treatment services. This work continues with Alessandra Kazura, MD, whose research interests also include family socialization influences on tobacco use uptake and cessation.
CTI research is a component of the Maine Medical Center Research Institute and the Center for Outcomes Research & Evaluation. CTI has obtained project funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Maine Health Access Foundation, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Maine’s Centers for Disease Control supports evaluation of a statewide Tobacco Treatment Initiative, a comprehensive program that has received national recognition for utilization and outcomes.
